NON NHS SERVICES
The NHS does not provide certain
services such as private sick notes, insurance claim forms, passport photo verification,
medical examinations to establish insurance risks or fitness for activities,
and some travel vaccinations. These services usually involve provision of information,
which is not necessary for your health care, to third parties such as employers,
insurance companies, regulatory authorities, etc. Charges are made in line with
BMA recommendations where allowed. Otherwise we charge a professional rate comparable
to accountants, solicitors etc. Private medical examinations are not performed
during normal surgery hours and special appointments must be made through reception.
An up-to-date price list is on display within the practice.
INSURANCE AND NON NHS MEDICALS:
These are arranged with your own
doctor by appointment only; and the recommended fee scales are displayed in the
surgeries.
SPECIAL
SERVICES
(Details of the following are available
at reception)
CONTRACEPTIVE SERVICE/FAMILY
PLANNING:
A full range of contraceptive services
is available (e.g. pill, cap, intra-uterine device, implants) either by appointment
through your own doctor. We
also provide advice on safer sex and abortion - all these are in strict confidence.
Young people can also discuss teenage
sexual health by appointment at the weekly family planning clinic held at Rothwell
and Desborough.
CHILD HEALTH SURVEILLANCE:
These are held in both centres and
are to ensure that the child is growing and developing normally. The health visitors
run them. Child health care clinics are held weekly in Rothwell and Desborough
with health visitors in attendance to give advice.
MINOR OPERATIONS:
These are arranged by your own doctor
and performed in the surgery.
CERVICAL SMEARS:
When a smear is due, a letter will
be sent to you. The practice nurse performs this test although your doctor will
do so if you wish. If you wish to know more about this procedure and why we consider
it advisable, make an appointment with either your doctor or the nurse.
IMMUNISATION AND VACCINATION:
Routine childhood immunisations
are held on Thursday mornings at the Rothwell surgery, and on Wednesday mornings
at the Desborough surgery. The health visitors administer these.
TRAVEL VACCINATIONS:
We would advise you to contact your
travel agent or tourist office/embassy of the country you intend to visit on
any special precautions you may need to take. Useful sources of information include
the Medical Advisory Centre for Travellers (09068 224100) or
a number of sites on the world wide web giving up-to-date advice.
A good example is http://www.masta.org/
email: enquiries@masta.org
You should contact the travel agent at least eight weeks in advance of foreign
travel so that any necessary vaccinations can be given and completed well before
departure. In most cases this will be free but in some circumstances there may
be a cost for vaccine and/or administration.
On your return, if you fall ill, do not forget to tell your doctor that you have
been abroad, also if you have received treatment abroad. When donating blood,
be sure to inform the transfusion staff which countries you have visited.
PODIATRY (CHIROPODY):
Some podiatry (footcare) services
are available at the Rothwell surgery, either through your own doctor or by self-referral.
Please ring 01536 410357/418298. Self-referral forms are available
from reception.
